It's been a fantastic first month of school together! Students have been learning various routines quickly and enjoying their time learning in the classroom. Here's an update on what's been going on in our classroom.
Math
We are finishing up our first unit this week! Students have learned a variety of skills such as traditional addition/subtraction methods and how to convert from yards to feet and feet to inches. We are finishing up the unit by learning about different angles and how to find perimeter. Our Unit 1 Post-Assessment is coming up in a couple days! They've been working hard as mathematicians, so definitely encourage them at home.
Reading
During Reader's Workshop, our class has been meeting in guided reading groups. We're learning how to map a story and identify various parts of a story using a graphic organizer.
Inquiry
Who We Are is almost over! Students engaged in an exploration into different types of governments this past week; we had a fun time roleplaying them as a class. Many students wanted to be a miner in our role play of a communist government! We will be exploring different rights and responsibilities we have as citizens of our country this week.
Writer's Workshop
Our writing has been closely tied to Inquiry. Up until now, we've learned how to write 5-sentence paragraphs with capitalization and punctuation being our focus. We've written multiple practice paragraphs on different topics of our choice. After we explore rights and responsibilities, students will be writing paragraphs on one right and responsibility that stuck out to them during their exploration. From there, we will be creating infographics using our paragraphs on Piktochart!
Being a Learning Community
In our classroom, I've been emphasizing what it means to be accountable for one another. We defined it as helping one another stay on track and be the best learner they can be. We've also been talking about and practicing perseverance in every subject area. I encourage you to continue this conversation at home with your students!
Announcements
Parent Teacher Conferences – Coming Soon!
Please sign-up to meet with me in October! I sent an email to you all, so look for the sign-up information there.
Late Morning Arrivals
We are noticing many students who are arriving late to school. As a reminder, the bell rings at 8:56. Please make sure children are dropped off for school on time. Late student arrivals cause disruptions to classrooms when kids and teachers have already begun their day of learning. Please do your very best to have your children to school on time.
Mitchell PTO Fun Run
The fun run is coming up on Friday, October 6! This is a PTO sponsored event that promotes wellness and exercise while raising funds for our school. The PTO is still looking for parent volunteers to help with the fun run! You can find contact information HERE.
Mitchell School Picture Day
Picture day is scheduled for Thursday, October 5th here at school. An informational flyer and order form came home in backpacks this week. You can also order pictures online by visiting mylifetouch.com with ID LM457098Y0.
Mitchell Food Distribution
All Mitchell and Scarlett families are welcome to pick up free food at Mitchell School on Saturday, October 7 at 9:30 AM. If you have registered before, you will not need to register again. If you have not previously registered, it is a short process.
This is available to all Mitchell and Scarlett families on the first Saturday of each month. Thank you to Community Action Network and Food Gatherers for their partnership in bringing this service to our community.
Parking at Mitchell
There are some parking spots available in front of Mitchell School. Additional parking is available in the Scarlett parking lot behind Mitchell School. Please DO NOT park in the front circle drive - ever. Parked cars create a traffic flow problem that can cause unsafe situations.
If you need to enter the building, please park in a parking space in one of our lots. Cars will line up on Lorraine as an entrance line into Mitchell and should not be parked on Lorraine. If you’d like to park, you can park in the Scarlett lot in the back or in the front Mitchell lot. Please know that I’m working to get a second call box on the back door so we can buzz parents in securely through the back door, as well as the front door. Thank you for your help!
