Hello families,
Here is an update! Our class has been busy doing a variety of different activities, and for this update I want to share some pictures of what we've been doing.

I'd like to emphasize one activity we did during Reader's Workshop. I believe it's crucial to a child's growth as a reader!
In Reader's Workshop, we are learning about metacognition.
Metacognition is thinking about thinking. Real reading consists of reading the text and thinking about it.
In this particular illustration, I read a text out loud and then "thought" about the text out loud. Students had to draw a tomato to represent "text" and lettuce to represent "thinking". It's all to show that as a salad isn't made up of just tomato or just lettuce, reading is a mix of thinking and reading the text.
During Reader's Workshop, we also started writing reader's letters. I've been explaining to the students that writing reader's letters is an opportunity for students to put their thinking on paper. It's all a part of being a "real" reader!
I encourage you to have conversations about the books your students are reading at home. It may require you to read parts of the book with or without them, or even do a quick Google search. I believe our partnership will help our students become great readers this year :)
