Hello everyone,
My name is Michelle, and I am your student's 4th grade teacher this upcoming year! We had a GREAT first week, and I wanted to share about what we've been doing to start off the year together. I split my posts up by subject, so I hope it's helpful!

Math
We've been taking many assessments since school started. This is to gauge where we're at before we learn any content, and to help us keep track of our progress! Students have been good team players and doing their best on each one so far. I sent home our first homework packet today, so you should be able to find them in your student's backpack. Homework will be on basic math skills until we dive into more complex content within the next two weeks.
Reading
Reader's Workshop has been slowly getting started in our classroom. We've gone over expectations in regards to independent reading time and have been practicing reading together. I've been benchmarking students as well to see where they're at in reading before we begin learning together.
Inquiry
I've been teaching each IB Learner Profile attribute to my students by reading books connected to each attribute and having conversations with them about it. We will be starting our first Unit of Inquiry soon as well. It will be under the transdisciplinary theme of Who We Are, and learning will be focused on our central idea: communities are defined by governments.
Writer's Workshop
Our writing has been connected to our inquiry times. After learning about an IB Learner Profile attribute, we've been making connections in our own lives to each attribute. We've learned about being caring and a risk-taker so far.
Being a Learning Community
We spent a lot of time learning different routines and expectations around them in our classroom (e.g. lining up, morning routine, end of the day procedures). Students first expressed their hopes and dreams this year (how they want to grow in 4th grade). We then expressed what a safe classroom would sound like, look like, and feel like. With little guidance, students came up with Essential Agreements (agreements as to how our classroom will function so that we can all do our best learning).
Announcements

I'd love to connect with you about your student! We have three conference days this year: Monday October 16th, Thursday October 19th, and Monday October 23rd. I will be sending out an email with time slots. Please sign-up as soon as you can so we can secure a time!
Parking Lot Safety - Parent Drop-Off & Pick-Up
If you drive your child to school or pick them up at the end of the day, please follow the posted signs around the school.
Parking at Mitchell
There are some parking spots available in front of Mitchell School. Additional parking is available in the Scarlett parking lot behind Mitchell School. Please DO NOT park in the front circle drive - ever. Parked cars create a traffic flow problem that can cause unsafe situations.
If you need to enter the building, please park in a parking space in one of our lots. Do not double park and block others in. You can park in the Scarlett lot in the back, in the front Mitchell lot or in the neighborhood. Thank you for your help!
Free & Reduced Lunch Application
Dear Families,
The free and reduced lunch application is helpful for families to fill out now and return to school. If approved, the form helps students get food at school and it also helps bring other money to the school to help us teach.
Please fill this form out and return to school Tuesday, September 5. You can find the application HERE. The form is in many languages at the bottom of the page. Or, you can fill the form out online.
Thank you for your help!
