Hello everyone,
I can't believe it's already October! The first month of school went by really quickly, and a lot has happened since the beginning of the new school year.
Our class is doing well and learning a lot together. The students are kind, focused, and ready to go every day. It's been a joy so far! Here's what's been going on in each subject area.

Who We Are
Communities are defined by governments.
We're on our first unit of inquiry around our rights and responsibilities as American citizens. We first explored different types of governments before zeroing in on a democracy and how our country has the Bill of Rights to protect its citizens. There's been a lot of interesting discussion, and we'll be moving forward in writing informational paragraphs about the rights and responsibilities we connect to most, as well as turning the paragraphs into infographics. If you haven't connected with us on Seesaw yet, please do so! We will be sharing our writing projects with you through Seesaw.
PLTW
4th graders are beginning their first PLTW module today! It will be on the topic of energy. PLTW will be Monday-Thursday until the end of October, where we will end the energy unit with a field trip to Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and do an energy lab together. This material will tie in with our next unit of inquiry, which will begin in a couple of weeks!
Math
Students have been zooming through the topics in our first unit, which consists of mostly review. We learned about place value, rounding numbers, finding perimeter, adding and subtracting with regrouping, and more. Please make sure students are doing their homework, which contains extra practice on what we're learning in the classroom! We'll be taking our first math unit assessment at the end of this week.
Reading
A couple of topics we've focused on are the IB Learner Profile traits, genres, and identifying character traits. We will be delving deeper into these topics this next month and work in guided reading groups. A2Stretch, our word work instruction model, will also begin this month. Students will be learning word structures and meanings with different teachers at the beginning of our reading block each day. I'm excited to see how students will grow this year as readers!

From Mr. Hilton:
Neighborhood Traffic and Speeding
Dear Mitchell Families,
As you drive your children to and from school, please be mindful of the following:
- Follow all posted speed limit signs within our neighborhoods. Many families use Fernwood and Lorraine as the access roads to Mitchell. Please be safe and follow the speed limits signs.
- Be mindful of idling engines at drop off and pick up.If you’re waiting awhile, shutting engines off helps to reduce emissions.
- As you arrive for pick up, please do not block the neighborhood driveways.
Thank you!
Matt

AAPS Bus Tracker App
The Ann Arbor Public Schools is excited to share news with those students and parents that utilize district-provided bus service. Our school bus partner, Durham School Services has provided an application, Bus Tracker, that allows parents and guardians to view the location of their child(ren)’s bus in real time with relationship to their assigned bus stop. This application is available through a web browser or the app stores. Bus Tracker enables parents and guardians to view multiple stops on an assigned route, including the scheduled arrival time for each stop. The service is free of charge to parents/guardians and provided at no additional cost to the school districts serviced by Durham School Services. Use of the application is voluntary.
