Hello everyone,
Here's an update from our classroom! The month of January was a busy time for our 4th graders. We partnered with UM to create opinion videos about the US-Mexico border wall. They inquired into the meaning of walls and then investigated the US-Mexico border wall specifically. After doing this research, groups of 4th graders formed their own opinions with reasons and evidence, and then worked together to make iMovie's to express their opinions.
We started a new unit of inquiry under the theme of How We Organize Ourselves!

We started a new unit of inquiry under the theme of How We Organize Ourselves!
How We Organize Ourselves (Inquiry/Writing/Reader's Workshop)
The central idea of our new unit is the following: demand and technological innovation drive economic change over time. Students have been learning about coding during our new unit of PLTW and researching different inventors and their inventions during reader's/writer's workshop. In their research, students have also been learning new ways of organizing their thinking and writing paraphrased notes.
Mark your calendars because all of 4th grade will be presenting their work at our 4th Grade World's Fair on Monday 3/19! The fair will start at 6pm in the Multipurpose Room. Student work will be displayed around the room and families will be free to explore and ask students questions about their work. It will be a great celebration of their hard work during this Unit of Inquiry.

Math
Students are in the middle of the fifth unit in math. We're focusing on adding/subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators. It's hard work, and we've been learning to persevere. I've also been challenging them to do some converting of improper fractions into mixed numbers as well, but this is work that will happen next year in 5th grade. We will be learning about plotting data on line plots soon.
