Hello families,
Fall is here! I hope you've been able to stay healthy with the weather changes that are happening. Here's some of the academic work we've been doing in the classroom!
Math
Students are reviewing/learning the traditional addition method. We've also been learning how to round and estimate. We have mini group lessons and then work in guided math groups (meaning rotations) for the rest of the time.
Ways for you to support: Ask your student to round different whole numbers you might see around you, like at home or the grocery store.
Reading
We've been learning how to describe characters and pointing to evidence in texts. Guided reading groups have also been going on. I am reading 3 different fiction books with 4 different groups. We meet a couple times a week and apply what we are learning during mini-lessons to our reading.
Ways for you to support: Ask your student to describe characters they might see in a movie, TV show, or video game.
Writing
We are learning how to form a narrative. Mrs. Rothman shared a story on Monday about her dog getting sprayed by a skunk. She's been visiting our classroom to work with the students on creating their version of her story. They have been having a lot of fun breaking apart her story and are getting ready to fill in details!
Ways for you to support: Encourage your student to share stories from school, or even to summarize a story from a book they're already reading.
Science
Nature's Recyclers! What are they? We've been learning about decomposition, dung/carrion beetles, and waste so far. I'm excited to dive further into the unit these next couple of weeks!
Ways for you to support: Have a discussion with your child about decomposition and different examples of it you might see around you. Ask them why they think decomposition happens! They all have interesting thoughts to share.
