We're deep into our second unit of inquiry and we've been having a lot of fun! Here's what's been going on in our classroom:
How The World Works
People use and convert energy to make things happen.
Students have been learning about different forms of energy and how energy is converted around us. During PLTW, they were able to work on building toys that convert energy. Our class needs a lot of work on being collaborative! Along with PLTW, we've also been writing our own myths that explain why certain light phenomena occurs in our world today. Students hope to share their stories with younger students at our school. The three phenomena students chose from are lightning, rainbows, and the aurora borealis. Their stories are coming along nicely, and we're learning how to incorporate dialogue and descriptive words to make our writing more interesting. It's been fun!
Math
We've completed two units in math so far, and students are doing really well! They've beat their goals so far, and our current goal is to have a class average of 82% on our upcoming math assessment. We've been learning about fractions, and it definitely hasn't been easy. We'll be dipping our toes in some decimal work too this upcoming week, and I hope you'll be able to work with your child at home on some of these concepts.
Reading
This A2Stretch cycle has come to an end, and we're currently reassessing students for the next cycle. Depending on growth, there will be changes to word work groups. We've also finished learning about story mapping and we're currently applying our knowledge to our myth writing. We will be learning more about informational text features and practice reading many different types of informational texts in the upcoming months.
Announcements
- Picture retakes will be TOMORROW. Please be sure to let me know if your child will need to take retakes and fill out the form I send home! Payment must be given with the completed form tomorrow.
- With the colder weather, please make sure your children are appropriately dressed to play outside. We want to give students as much exercise as possible even in the winter months!
- Our class has been having issues with bringing in Beyblades and having regrets about trades they've been making during recess time. I would like to ask you to remind your students to keep them at home and to NOT bring them into school. Thank you!
From Mr. Hilton:
Mitchell PTO Meeting – All Are Welcome!
The Mitchell PTO will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, November 19 at 6:00 PM at school. All families are welcome and encouraged to attend!
Late After School Pick-Up
We are noticing some students are not being picked up on time from school. As a reminder, the bell rings at 3:59. It is not okay for students to be left unattended at school. Please plan to arrive in the school pick-up line by 3:59. We will do our very best to move the line of cars through the line as quickly and safely as possible. Thank you for your help.
Third Grade IB Unit – Message From Third Grade Teachers
Third graders are currently engaged in an action project to support the Humane Society of Huron Valley. We began our "How We Organize Ourselves" unit by visiting the Humane Society and 3rd graders are passionate about exercising their citizenship by helping the animals in our community. Our central idea is that "citizens have responsibilities" and we are completing this action project as a learning experience to help 3rd graders understand how compassion drives citizenship. We are collecting donations from the Humane Society's wish list and would love your support. There is a flyer in your student's mailbox today with a complete list of items but gently used towels, blankets, items from the HSHV amazon wishlist, and unopened pet food items are highly appreciated. The donation boxes are located outside of the 3rd grade classrooms. Thank you for supporting our students and the animals of our community!
